

A series of four informal slide-talks in connection with current and upcoming exhibitions in the UK, given by local artist and art historian Dr Andrew Paterson, who is a Teaching Fellow at the University of Edinburgh. Wednesday evenings, fortnightly, 11th February to 25th March, 7.30 to 8.30pm.

Joan Eardley: The Nature of Painting
Exhibition at Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh, April – June 2026
One of Scotland’s most popular artists, Joan Eardley (1912-63) devoted her passionate creativity to two main types of subject – in the 1950s she drew and painted children living in slum conditions in the Townhead district of Glasgow, while in later life she also focused on the sea and the landscape around the fishing village of Catterline on the east coast. The Edinburgh exhibition will juxtapose Eardley’s paintings with works by artists who inspired her, including her contemporaries Jean Dubuffet and Antoni Tapies as well as Constable and Monet.
Each talk will last approximately one hour.
