A series of four informal slide-talks in connection with current and upcoming exhibitions in the UK, given by local artist and art historian Dr Andrew Paterson, who is a Teaching Fellow at the University of Edinburgh. Wednesday evenings, fortnightly, 11th February to 25th March, 7.30 to 8.30pm.
Wednesday 11 February, 7:30 PM
Gwen John: Strange Beauties
Exhibition at Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh, August 2026 – January 2027
Goldsworthy exhibition at the Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh, 26th July to 2nd November
Finlay exhibition at Gallery of Modern Art 2, Edinburgh until 26th May
Gwen John (1876-1939) was one of the first generation of women to gain access to formal art education in this country. Her achievement as a portrait painter of great subtlety is now recognised in its own right, although in her own lifetime her work was overshadowed by her association with two ‘alpha male’ artists, her brother Augustus John and her lover Auguste Rodin. The Edinburgh exhibition, marking 150 years since her birth, is the first major retrospective of her work for over 40 years.
Each talk will last approximately one hour.
Ticket Price: £15, £50 for all
Location: Birks Cinema 1st Floor Community Learning Space
