A series of four informal slide-talks in connection with current and upcoming exhibitions in the UK, given by local artist and art historian Dr Andrew Paterson, who is a Teaching Fellow at the University of Edinburgh. Wednesday evenings, fortnightly, 12th February to 26th March, 7.30 to 8.30pm.

Forty Years of Scotland’s Photography Collection
(Exhibition at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh, until 16th March)

In 2024, the National Galleries of Scotland celebrated 40 years of collecting photography, and the current exhibition at the SNPG features highlights from this world-class collection of over 55,000 photographs, including work by Julia Margaret Cameron, Bert Hardy, Don McCullin, and Arpita Shah. The talk will consider a few of the various functions of ‘art-photography’ since its invention, including celebrity portraiture, photo-journalism, and commentary on socio-cultural issues.

Each talk will last approximately one hour.
