In Death of an Ordinary Man – an unflinching, tender work of non-fiction – Sarah Perry trains her gaze on the dying process itself, taking us to the bedside of her father-in-law as his life ends, just days after his cancer diagnosis. The author of The Essex Serpent and Booker-nominated Enlightenment reflects on why she chose to write about this intimate time of heightened experience and astonishment – a conversation as much about living as it is about dying.
