Creative Learning and Education Officer
The Birks Cinema Trust is a charity which owns and manages The Birks Cinema in Aberfeldy. With around 21,000 people already visiting our cultural programme and 5,500 for our community programme, we now intend to launch a Creative Learning and Education Programme.
This programme for young people and our community will be developed in the context of the inclusion of screen and film education in the Curriculum for Excellence Schools curriculum and involve other artforms including drama and music. A stakeholder consultation, feasibility study, and design of an education programme are required, which will also be developed in conjunction with other arts and culture organisations within Highland Perthshire.
Birks Cinema Trust is now recruiting a Creative Learning and Education Officer on a 12-month fixed-term contract to lead on the development of this programme.
This would require the successful candidate to:
- Undertake research into creative learning and education provision for young people and adults in our community and surrounding area in film, arts, and the creative industries to create a map of provision and identify relevant stakeholders.
- Devise and manage a consultation exercise with local young people, education providers, community and arts and cultural organisations, and other relevant stakeholders, including funders.
- Use the outputs of the consultation to design and scope a creative learning and education programme to be delivered by Birks Cinema Trust in partnership with others.
- Develop a feasibility study for the delivery of the creative learning and education programme with a supporting 5-year business plan and budget.
- Identify sources of funding to implement the business plan.
Skills and Experience Required:
- Knowledge of current arts and cultural education provision in Scotland at primary, secondary, and tertiary levels, including knowledge of the Curriculum for Excellence.
- Research skills.
- Partnership working, including experience of negotiating and developing partnerships with schools, cultural organisations, voluntary organisations, and local authorities.
- Experience of designing and delivering collaborative projects or programmes that are innovative, inclusive, and accessible.
- Experience of integrating national and regional educational policy priorities with local plans for education and creative learning.
- Project and budget management, planning, and organisational skills, with experience of initiating, developing, and managing projects and the development of programmes.
- Ability to effectively convey information and ideas to others through both verbal and non-verbal means, including active listening, clear expression, adapting communication style to different audiences, and understanding non-verbal cues, allowing for meaningful interaction and mutual understanding.
- Experience and understanding of the challenges and issues of delivering services in rural communities would be desirable.
- Knowledge of Gaelic language and culture would be desirable.
The role is full-time at 37.5 hours per week, including daytime, evening, and weekend work as required for the proper performance of the role. Salary: To be discussedThe Birks Cinema is an ambitious outward-looking community enterprise in the heart of the popular and picturesque town of Aberfeldy in rural Perthshire. The Cinema incorporates a café split over two levels that offers breakfast and lunch options as well as cinema snacks and refreshments. Our focus is to improve the lives and well being of the community we serve by providing a social hub and space for local groups to run activities.
The organisation is currently seeking to appoint a cook/cafe assistant who can deliver delicious food for our bustling café in rural Perthshire. The ideal candidate will be passionate about food and willing to contribute ideas as part of developing the new food offering at the café. This position would suit a person with a flexible approach when it comes to days and hours of work and a ‘can-do’ attitude.
Purpose
The cook will be tasked with preparing hot and cold meals to order in a small, but perfectly formed kitchen. Food preparation will include cooking of a small range of breakfast and lunch items. The post will work independently in the kitchen with the support of the Café Manager and a small front of house team.
Responsibilities
- Provide Birks customers with both hot and cold meals.
- Provide catering for meetings, conferences and special events.
- Ensure that a high standard of cleanliness is maintained at all items.
- Ensure that the due diligence is completed and the café is compliant with food hygiene laws.
- Ordering stock to ensure we meet customer demand.
- Look after equipment in the kitchen area and ensure it is deployed appropriately and safely.
- Plus any other ad hoc duties as and when they arise.

Experience
- Experience preparing hot and cold meals to order ideally in a café environment
- Familiar with completing due diligence records
- Used to working independently in a kitchen
- Flexible approach to working shifts in a busy catering environment
- Familiar with working with a small team of front of house staff
- Interest in working for a community enterprise (desirable)
- Basic food knowledge and kitchen skills will be required, with a minimum of 1 year in the industry
- Level 1 food hygiene certificate
- Customer service and till operation knowledge
